Gratitude: The Super Power You Need To Harness Now
With the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner, we typically take this time to give thanks and reflect on what we’re grateful for. This is a wonderful ritual that we look forward to each year. But I dare say, we’re missing out on a lot the other 364 days by not turning this annual ritual into a bona fide habit.
Gratitude, oh how I love thee gratitude! When I learned about the true importance of this awesome little super power several years back it was really a life changer. Yes, you can hack your life with a little bit more of it. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the wants, have-nots and wishes in our day to day. Turning that around takes the formation of a new healthy habit. Side effects include increased happiness, feeling good about yourself and more frequent smiles.
It’s pretty easy to begin. It’s all about mindfulness and purposely expressing gratitude in whatever way is easy and comfortable for you. Here’s a few ideas:
1. Wake up grateful. When your feet hit the floor, think or say out loud “I am so happy and grateful for this awesome day”. Or, “I’m so grateful for my good night’s sleep”. Or, “I’m so grateful to walk my dog in the sunshine”. You get the picture!
2. Start a gratitude journal. Every day write down 1-3 things you’re grateful for. They don’t have to be epic. In fact it’s the little things we forget about that really make life amazing.
3. Mindful redirection. I’m a big fan of redirection. When you begin to feel a good fuss coming on, try to mindfully turn yourself around and say something of gratitude instead. Pretty soon the fussy comments or negative banter in our own brains will diminish and the grateful thoughts will take over!
When you see how much you have in your life to be grateful for you’re going to be amazed. You will feel like a superhero! You will bring even more awesome into your life to be grateful for! Cheers to gratitude!
