Mastering The Game Of Good Health
Being healthy sure has it’s challenges these days. I mean, every time we turn around there’s something delicious to eat or drink just ready and willing to be devoured. And of course there’s binge watching the entire season of Dark Matter on Netflix to contend with!
Do you know what else is challenging? Video games, and we certainly don’t back down from those challenges now do we? Heck no!
Video games give us a series of quests or missions to get through. They start off easy and work their way up in difficulty. That’s basically how we should work on our own good health habits. Give yourself small, attainable quests. Conquer them one at a time and before you know it you’ll be leveled up to legendary!
Here’s a few tips to get you on course…
Quest 1 – The food challenge: So you don’t like fruits and veggies. Neither did I in my first 25 years of life! Well, fruit yes but veggies, not so much. In fact, I grew up super picky and didn’t really like much of anything that I should have been eating. What I did develop though was the “want” to like healthy foods. I started by “sneaking” things like broccoli or spinach in small amounts into foods I loved. Gradually increasing the good stuff every time I made a dish until I came to love the food. Now I can throw down on some broccoli!
Quest 2 – The movement challenge: Let’s face it. We sit a lot! We have to get moving to be at our best. To me this is easier than liking new foods because walking doesn’t taste bad! You do not have to start working out for 2 hours 5 days a week. Heck, that would make anyone give up. Just 10 minutes of exercise a day can make big differences so start with a quick walk. Level up by increasing it to 15 then 20, then 30 minutes of walking. Level up more by adding new workouts in the mix. Weight training is the best. It builds muscle to keep us mighty and the more muscle we have the more calories we’ll burn just by being alive. Sweet!
Quest 3 – The mind challenge: When we get started on our new health journey, bumps in the road can creep up fast. Usually those bumps are manifested in our own brains. We’ll tell ourselves we’re not strong enough, can’t learn to cook, probably won’t see a difference and lots of other nonsense. This is when you really need to channel your inner paladin and fight! And fight hard, because you’ve got one body. You’ve got one seriously amazing life to live. Because YOU ARE WORTH IT!
So just like in game, when we do complete our quests we want rewards right? Of course. You can have as much fun as you want with this. But you should definitely do something just for you when you accomplish all these new healthy habits. A new outfit, a new video game, an extra fun night out. Make it count. Keep leveling up your goals.
You can do it! After all, you are a Mighty Paladin! Woot!
