Three Reasons You Should Never Outgrow Video Games
I fondly remember when I was 11 years old an arcade opened up in the grocery store shopping center near my home. Sure, there were some video games at the skating rink and pizza joints but this was different! It didn’t take long for my mom to get a regular dose of “pleeeaaase take me and my friends to the arcade”.
It was a blast. The lights. The sounds. Sticking a five-dollar bill into a machine and filling your little cup full of quarters. The anticipation of waiting in line to finally get to your favorite game. It was the greatest! And what came next… Well, Santa bringing me my very own Atari 2600 of course!
Yes, in case you couldn’t guess I’m a child of the 80’s. Now that I’m a child at heart woman in her 40’s I still have just as much fun playing video games. There are some pretty awesome reasons to keep on gaming through life. Here’s three of my favorites…
1. They keep you happy! Playing video games gives you an awesome sense of accomplishment and keeps you in a goal oriented state of mind which is great for motivation. This activates the reward pathway systems in your brain which could be great for those suffering from depression or anxiety. Pretty good stuff!
2. They keep you social! Let’s face it, gone are the days of skipping up to someone at the park and saying “will you play with me”? But video games bring people together right in your own neighborhood and all across the world. We connect socially in the game, on social media like Twitter and in person through common meet up groups. So… Let’s be friends!
3. They keep you young! I’m not just talking young at heart (which they certainly do!). They also stimulate your brain in ways that improve cognitive functions, memory and problem solving skills. So feeling like a kid again is definitely good for our grown-up selves!
There you go! Stay young and happy gaming!
